In the past, I have celebrated Juneteenth and I'm still in favor of such celebrations. However, I want to make one thing perfectly clear for anyone who is in any way connected to me. People were enslaved they were not slaves. Human beings were in bondage due to a system. Those human beings were just like you and me. Don't try to sanitize history for the sake of reducing cognitive dissonance. Let the pain seep into your consciousness and then realize that the celebration of Juneteenth is about honoring people who overcame a system. They weren't static in this victory. They were catalysts. Juneteenth isn't about some magic, wonderful person saying I now make you free.
There is an African proverb that comes to mind I'm paraphrasing - as long as the lion can't write the hunter keeps telling his tale of the hunt...Let that sink in...
